Let’s face it, exercise can be a chore, monotonous, achy and generally dull … and then came along VirZOOM! What these guys have cleverly achieved is to combine a workout with the interaction and immersion of VR gaming.
So how does this all work? Well first of all there’s the light-weight, fold-able x-bike; minimal yet functional. This clever piece of kit has the gaming controllers (including trigger and d-pads) integrated into the handle bars. Once you’ve seated yourself on the bike and put on your headset (Oculus Rift or HTC Vive compatible) you’re ready to work out and enjoy.
Thankfully the guys here have come up with a bunch of great games to accompany the bike in the form of VirZoom Arcade. These games work alongside your exercise for example if you’re riding a horse in the wild west, the faster the pedal in real life, the faster you gallop on the horse so can lasso the bad guys.
Virtual reality exercise bike
Overall there are five different virtual reality game worlds you can interact with to enhance your workout and you know what they aren’t too shabby. ‘Go Fast Car’ has you playing as a racing car dog, hurtling round a circuit. ‘Pegasus’ allows you to experience what’s it like to ride a unicorn through canyons. ‘Cowboy’ has you as the sheriff riding a horse to catch the bad guys. ‘Tank’ puts you in the hot seat of WW2 tank with the goal to take out the others. Finally ‘Apache’ has you riding an Apache helicopter and completing various missions. VirZOOM! state that this is an evolving bundle and we’re sure we’ll see some new ones soon.
Overall the graphics look great, they may not be as polished as some of the high spec VR games but the fast paced action makes up for it. With such a multitude of game mechanics to choose from there’s also definitely longevity in these games. Along with single player mode there’s also network play and five different workout modes from quick play through to award challenge.
Of course as well as having fun you can get serious around your workout. With the x-bike you can track various measurements from heart rate and average speed through to distance travelled.
Here’s to burning off your beer belly whilst riding a unicorn. Sounds surreal, is ace.
